The focus of this session will be on translanguaging as an inclusive and transformational educational tool that can be used for creating more equitable and accessible classroom spaces for all students, but particularly those who are emergent bilingual and/or classified as having a dis/ability and/or identify as LGBTQ. In this session, participants will experience opportunities to reflect on their own backgrounds and practice, share experiences and ideas in small- and whole-group, and think concretely about how to create a more linguistically-inclusive and -flexible classroom space and community. Participants will walk away with an understanding of what translanguaging is and how the social construction of named/boundaried languages and genders are rooted in colonialism, a plan for creating spaces for translanguaging in their classrooms, and a list of resources for learning more about translanguaging.
